Congratulations to the Keystone Beef Marketing Network (KBMN) for receiving a $300,000 Value-Added Producer Grant awarded in May 2013 from The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). KBMN was one of 110 grants awarded nationally to agricultural producers and rural businesses that will help create jobs and develop new products. The grant will be used as working capital funds to develop and implement the KBMN supply chain infrastructure and to coordinate marketing activities.
KBMN is a non-profit agricultural producer group formed in 2010 with a primary purpose to coordinate statewide cattle programs to enhance Pennsylvania cattle producers’ profitability through aggregated marketing and sales of Pennsylvania beef stock. Working strategically, KBMN facilitates the collection of calves for consolidated loads, purchases and sells cattle in local and regional markets, develops instate infrastructure for increased local sales with reduced transportation costs and additional premiums, conducts competitive analysis or bidding and price discovery before the cattle leave the farm, and defines/administers protocol to optimize value and increase revenues for producers. The organization also provides financing programs, consultation on health programs, breeding and vaccination programs. To ensure an ongoing profitable market for beef producers, the network also impacts the local feedlot operators, auction barn owners, processors and consumers.
KDC is proud to see this farmer owned business succeed. KDC assisted the group in grant preparation, and previously provided them with both a feasibility study and business plan. In 2014, we plan to work with the Keystone Beef Marketing Network to further strengthen the slaughter capacity in PA.
